What this is
Trees do not fail during business hours. A 24 hour line only matters if somebody actually picks it up, so ours goes to a person rather than a voicemail box that gets checked in the morning.

- Live answer, day or night
- Dispatch decision made on the call
- Priced before the crew rolls
- Serving Lawrence, Topeka, and the surrounding counties
If It Is Happening Right Now, Do This First
You are probably reading this at an hour when nothing is open. Work the list below before you start calling around. It takes about ten minutes, it is the same list our office would walk you through on the phone, and it keeps you from doing something at 2am that costs you the claim or costs you a hand.
The order is deliberate. People, then utilities, then documentation, then contractors. Every step above the one you are on protects the steps below it.
- 1 Move everyone out of the part of the building the tree is touching, and out of any room with a sagging or cracked ceiling.
- 2 Look for wires with a flashlight from a distance. Treat all of them as live. Do not approach a wire to see whether it is a phone line.
- 3 If a line is down or in the tree, call Evergy at 800-544-4857 before anything else. That call also gets the outage into their system.
- 4 Smell of gas, hissing, or a struck meter means everyone out of the building and a 911 call from outside.
- 5 Photograph and video everything before anything moves, including at night with the flash. Poor night photos still establish what was where and when.
- 6 Call your insurance carrier's claims line, which almost all of them staff around the clock, and get a claim number.
- 7 Move contents out of the wet room and put buckets and plastic where the water is coming in.
- 8 Then call a tree service and describe three things: what the tree is on, whether a line is involved, and whether access is blocked.
What Happens When You Call at Three in the Morning
A person picks up. That is the whole point of the service and it is the part most companies advertise without providing. A line that rolls to a voicemail box checked at seven the next morning is a business hours line with a longer greeting.
The person answering asks a short set of questions designed to sort the call: what the tree is resting on, whether anyone is displaced, whether a conductor is involved, whether the drive or the street is blocked, and what the weather is doing where you are. From those answers we decide whether a crew rolls tonight or whether you are better served by a scheduled slot.
You get a price before a truck leaves the yard. Not a range, not an on-arrival assessment, a number. There are situations where the price has to be a not-to-exceed figure because nobody can see the far side of the tree in the dark, and we say that out loud rather than leaving it open.
- Live answer at any hour, weekends and holidays included
- Dispatch decision made during the call rather than after a callback
- Price quoted before the crew leaves
- Lawrence, Topeka, and the surrounding counties, including the corridor along I-70 and both sides of the Kansas River
Night Work Has Real Limits, and We Will Tell You Them
Working a damaged tree in the dark means working with less information. You cannot see the far side of a canopy under a work light, you cannot read a crack in the trunk properly, and you cannot judge how a root plate is sitting. A good night crew handles this by doing less, not by working faster.
So night work is scoped narrowly. Get the tree off the structure, clear the access, tarp the opening, secure anything that could move before morning. Bucking rounds, chipping brush, grinding a stump, raking a lawn, and pulling ruts back out of turf all wait for daylight, and they cost less in daylight.
There are also jobs we will not do at night at all. A large removal over a house that genuinely needs a crane is a daylight job unless the tree is actively moving, because setting a crane in the dark on soft ground next to a foundation adds more risk than it removes. When that is the answer, we secure what we can, tarp, and come back at first light.
When Waiting Until Morning Is the Right Call
Emergency and storm call-outs run about fifty percent above the same work done on a schedule, according to Today's Homeowner data covering Topeka, Lawrence and Shawnee. Three separate city datasets, same result. That is a real premium and it buys you something real, but only when the situation is deteriorating.
A tree that is down in the yard, hit nothing, is not on a line, and is not blocking anything is not deteriorating. Neither is a large limb resting on an intact roof in dry weather with no wind forecast. Those are Tuesday jobs and we will book them as Tuesday jobs even when you offer to pay the night rate.
The situations worth the premium are the ones where the clock is costing you money or safety: an opened roof with rain coming, a tree still shifting on a root plate, a blocked driveway you need at 6am, or anything at all involving a conductor.
- Worth the night rate: open roof with weather coming, a shifting tree, blocked access, any line involvement
- Not worth it: yard tree that hit nothing, limb resting on a sound roof in dry weather, cosmetic damage
- Ask us. We answer this question the same way whether or not it wins us the night job.
Insurance at Two in the Morning
Nearly every homeowners carrier staffs a claims line around the clock, so you can open a claim at the same hour you are calling us. Do it. The claim number makes everything downstream easier and it timestamps the loss on the carrier's own system.
Homeowners policies generally cover tree removal when a tree hits a covered structure, and generally do not when it comes down in the yard and hits nothing. Whether the tree was yours or the neighbor's usually matters less than where it landed. Get the photographs before the crew touches anything, because once the saw starts the evidence is gone.
Emergency work also produces a specific kind of paperwork problem. Some carriers want an adjuster to view the loss before major work begins, but no carrier expects you to leave a roof open in the rain. Mitigation to prevent further damage, meaning the tarp and getting the tree off the structure, is normally expected of you. We document that portion separately on the invoice so the adjuster can see what was emergency mitigation and what was scheduled cleanup.
Vetting a Company You Are Hiring in the Dark
Kansas has no state licensing requirement for tree removal companies. That fact matters most at night and after storms, because those are exactly the moments when the normal checks feel like a luxury you cannot afford. They are not.
Two documents settle it. A certificate of liability insurance and proof of workers compensation, both issued by the carrier rather than printed by the contractor. An uninsured worker injured on your property in the middle of the night becomes your liability, and the homeowner discovers this after the fact roughly every time.
Beyond that, ask for the price in writing before the saw runs, refuse to pay in full in advance, and be skeptical of anyone who happened to be driving through your neighborhood at midnight. Legitimate crews are dispatched to calls. They do not cruise.
- Certificate of liability insurance sent from the insurer
- Workers compensation covering every person on site
- ISA or Kansas Arborists Association certification
- Written price or a written not-to-exceed figure before work begins
- No full payment up front, and no cash-only terms

24 Hour Tree Service questions
Do you actually answer at 3am?
Yes, a person rather than a machine. And if what you describe is not urgent, we will tell you that and book you for normal hours instead of sending a crew out at overtime rates for a job that would be identical on Tuesday.
What should I have ready when I call?
Three things: what the tree is resting on, whether any wire is involved, and whether your driveway or the street is blocked. If you know the rough size of the tree and whether a truck can get to the back yard, say that too. It changes what we bring.
Can you work on a tree that is on a power line at night?
Not on the primary lines. Those belong to Evergy and have to be de-energized or covered by their crews before anyone works near them. Call 800-544-4857. The service drop running from the pole to your house is a different matter and we can usually handle that.
How much more does night work cost?
Emergency and storm call-outs average roughly fifty percent above scheduled work in this market, based on Today's Homeowner data for Topeka, Lawrence and Shawnee. A tree on a structure or a job needing a crane runs higher than that. You get the number before the truck leaves.
Will you finish the whole job that night?
Rarely, and that is deliberate. Night work is getting the tree off the structure, clearing access, and tarping. Bucking, chipping, stump work, and cleanup happen in daylight when we can see, and that second visit is billed at normal rates.
Do you cover Topeka as well as Lawrence?
Both, along with the surrounding counties. Travel time affects how quickly a crew reaches an outlying property, and we will give you an honest arrival window rather than a flattering one.
Can I call my insurance company in the middle of the night?
Almost certainly. Nearly every carrier staffs claims around the clock. Opening the claim at the time of the loss timestamps it in their system and gets you a claim number before the cleanup starts.
Someone is already at my door offering to do the work. Should I let them?
Not without a certificate of liability insurance and workers compensation issued by their carrier, and a written price. Kansas does not license tree removal companies, so those documents are the only real check available to you, and the hours when they are hardest to insist on are exactly the hours when they matter most.
