Oak Wilt in Kansas: Why Oaks Wait Until Winter
Oak wilt is in northeast Kansas. Why pin oak and bur oak stay off the saw from April through July, and what to do after a storm cut.
Tree trimming in Lawrence and Topeka already has a dormant-season rule for oaks. This article is the disease behind that rule, so a homeowner does not book a May oak trim because the weather is nice.
What oak wilt does here
Oak wilt is a vascular fungus. It plugs the water-conducting tissue. Red oaks, including pin oak, often wilt in a single season. Bur oak is slower. Neighborhoods with connected root systems can lose more than one tree.
Northeast Kansas already carries the other two clocks: emerald ash borer and pine wilt. Oaks are the trees people try to keep. A May prune on a pin oak is how a keepable tree becomes a tree removal.
The calendar
Do not prune oaks from April through July.
Sap beetles feed on fresh wounds in that window and move spores from a diseased tree to a healthy one. Late fall through late winter is the tree pruning window for oaks. The canopy is bare, the beetles are not flying, and the cuts have time to dry.
If a storm forces a cut on an oak in summer, say so when you call. That is the one case where a wound dressing is worth talking about. A planned summer oak trim is not.
The month-by-month calendar for other species is on when to prune trees in Kansas.
What we look at before anyone cuts
Dead limbs in the upper crown. Bronzing that starts at the top and moves down. A neighbor oak that failed last year. Whether the tree sits in a row that likely shares roots.
Plenty of oaks with a few dead laterals are deadwooding jobs, not removals. A pin oak that has already lost most of its canopy is a removal conversation, then stump grinding if you want to mow.
